, dan. the death toll continues to climb with at least 1 american and 11 other hostages reported to have been killed. the algerian military has twice stormed the natural gas facility. but authorities say the situation this morning, is still not resolved. and a number of western workers, including americans, apparently remain hostages. the state department has now confirmed that 58-year-old fred buttaccio of suburban houston, was killed at some point during the attack and subsequent rescue effort. but another american, mark cobb of corpus christi, texas, is now confirmed as safe. cobb was the senior manager at the bp facility algeria. and sent a message saying, i'm alive. the al qaeda-linked group claims the attack on the facility in the african desert, had been planned for some two months. in both assault, the algerian army, using tanks and helicopters, found the terrorists were heavily armed and prepared to fight to the death. one official described the aftermath as carnage. hostages who escaped or were freed, said the terrorists only wanted westerners or americans, and were brutal in t

earnings pushed the dow and s&p 500 to five-year highs. will the good times last? let's find out. dan, it will be a big week for the markets and big week for technology and apple. >> technology is really interesting. as a whole it's trading well and trading like some of the better acting sectors in the s&p 500 approaching five-year highs. when you think about the action today, what we saw today, financials continue to run on very good earnings. we saw some industrial stocks well off their 52 highs reacting well to the chinese gdp number. to me there's a really interesting set-up as we approach next week's tech earnings that we have things that haven't gotten back to those highs acting very well. >> i think one of the paints you were making with financials doing well, they haven't gotten close to where they were when the market was at these levels before. there were three things i thought were interesting. what do ann taylor and intel and chipotle have in common? narrowing margins, intel increased cap backs and ann taylor was talked about excessive discounting narrowing their margins.

international correspondent dan rivers. he's in london to to see bring us the latest. good morning. what can you tell us then about the reports of this final assault? >> reporter: well, this is being carried out by algerian state-run television saying that seven further victims have been recovered and 11 militants. now it's really difficult to grasp the total number of hostages that have been killed so far. we're trying to put it together, but they probably include japanese, brits, malasians, possibly some norwegians and other nationalities. it's very difficult to know the final numbers. but adding up what we know it could be up to at least 32 missing and possibly up to 26 confirmed dead, although those numbers have been changing a lot. that gives you a sense of the scale of this anyway. among those, at least one american i'm afraid confirmed dead. six americans confirmed rescued, freed. and those details as i say, we're hoping to try and get more clarification in the coming hours. >> what is being said about this crisis there in britain? >> reporter: well, william hague, the british foreign sec

necessary to protect americans in a harrowing hostage crisis unfolding in algeria. dan rivers is in london to bring us the very latest this morning. dan, good morning to you. algeria is defending a military operation that now has left at least one american and 11 others dead. what can you tell us about that? >> absolutely. this situation is not over yet. i think that is the headline. they're saying they're still pursuing terrorists and some hostages within this sprawling gas plant in the far south of algeria. as you say, the state department has confirmed one death. it's been widely reported he is from texas. the state department not going into further details about how many americans may still be missing. we're waiting for an update from london from the british foreign secretary william hague, chairing an emergency meeting about this. algerian state television is reporting that terrorists were planning to kill all of the hostages and to blow up this plant. so, it could have been a lot worse, had they managed to get through that. in the end algerians went in, freed some 650 people. there a

. for that i want to bring in my colleague, white house correspondent dan lothian. dan, let's talk about priorities for the president's second term but first it's an interesting little nugget of history. this is a historic day and also a historic inauguration for president obama because he's going to match only fdr in getting two double swear-ins or four swearing-ins if you will. why is that? >> first of all, look back to 2009 when justice roberts and the president kind of stepped on each other, the word "faithfully" out of order, there was a question whether or not it was legitimate so, they had a second one in the private quarters of the white house. this time around the constitution says you have to administer the oath before noon on the 20th. on sunday is not typically when we have the inauguration, so they'll have a private ceremony in the blue room on sunday and then on monday they'll have the official sort of public swearing-in for the president. >> and the parade and pomp and circumstance we expect in an inauguration ceremony. so, tuesday the pomp and circumstance monday, tuesday

's the portola, foster recognition. and, dan, things started happening. one of the things that gave attention to our neighborhood is when we decided we were going to have a new branch library. ruth wallace came up with the idea of a garden tour and a lot of us thought, a garden tour? our neighborhood? who is going to come? well, we had every -- we've done it for six years. every year we've grown incrementally. after the first two years of raising money for the library -- there's our new library -- we then it was such a great community builder that we recently decided to keep wanting to volunteering and do it. we established a scholarship at city college for the horticultural department. and we have just gone gangbusters. we get good press and we get to see everybody's neighbor -- all our neighbors' gardens. because of the way san francisco s you get to be veuyer because usually you have to go through their garage or their house to see the gardens. and ruth gets known through the neighborhood because she's constantly peeking over fences and leaving fliers in people's mailboxes saying, do you w
